I'm pretty sure that anyone who'd look at this is aware of it, but I'm part of a co-op punk record store thats opening here in Winnipeg THIS WEEKEND. It's called WAR ON MUSIC at 333 garry. Come check me out there on saturdays 11-7, or go check it out any other day at those same hours. (sunday 12-6)
Anyways I'm really stoked on the idea of being so many records. it's gonna be hard for a brokeass person like me to resist spending all my money there. Here's the shit i brought home last night... its pretty funny that 3 of these bands are a few of my favorites over the last bunch of years and i brought home new records all in one haul.
(as usual, these "reviews" are just bullshit and these records will get a more proper treatment later on in my stupid excuse for a zine.)
THE RITES - FUCK EM IF THEY CAN'T TAKE A JOKE EP.upon first listen, which doesn't usually tell me much, this band is kinda fallin off. I regret to join the legions of scum who haven't thought alot of this band all along, but I've been pretty into 3 out of 5 of their records. They say fuck us if we can't take a joke, but i took the joke when you're last record was a silly one sided live 12". (it actually is pretty entertaining due to the heckling) Anyways the joke this time around is the b-side that starts with some dudes playing paddy cake of something before the band rips into a cover that I don't recognize, but assume that it's something pretty sketchy. I'm probably just posing and its some classic punk I'm supposed to be up on. Shit on me.
KNIFE FIGHT - CRISIS 12".I can't believe it's taken so long for this to come together. I finally cracked after a long time of waiting and soulseeked this about a week ago, and i've listened to it at least 30 times. This is my shit. This band has taken back their special place in my heart, and pretty much realizes for me what my perfect vision of hardcore should be before I even know it. This is a little different than the older stuff but once you get used to the new sound it still sounds like the same band...
i love this shit, this is what I'll have on my headphones when i kill you.
TERMINAL STATE - SICK EP.
Another single from this Toronto band that I really want to like so bad, but always seems to fall a little short. There were some great moments and bangin songs on their 12", but these singles arent really doing so much for me. Again i haven't given it much of a chance yet but this just isn't really doing so much for me right now...
Maybe I shouldn't shittin on this before I give it more of a chance. In a later review i may rave on about how this band is saving hardcore.
Last but (maybe) not least, is the VIOLENT MINDS/NEVER HEALED split 7".I'm not entirely sure why this exists. I'm not too into this NEVER HEALED bands thing, and i the VIOLENT MINDS stuff is not up to par, it's even stylistically a little off.
With the "Eyes of Death" 12" finally available that I've been rockin for a couple years already, and the "We Are Nothing" 12" on the way, (also awesome) it's pretty hard to bum me out on this band. From the first time i heard them (at their first show!) this band has had me shitting my pants since day one, and there are very few apers of early hardcore that i can hold in higher regard.
Maybe theres a legion of rabid fans that I'm unaware of but i think this band is criminally underrated, possibly due to alot of bullshit that keeps people from taking them seriously, but the music is some serious shit. As real as it gets.
Oh and there's a song on this record about selling out and getting rich off hardcore, where im sure he's refering to his NO WARNING days. It's reassuring to hear him calling out the fans of his bullshit ass band.
News in my world:
BORN BAD repress coming RIGHT AWAY... green covers, havent seen em yet. 300 more copies, like the world needed that.
UNDER PRESSURE's Black Bile 12" also for FASHIONABLE IDIOTS is going through its final stages of preparation and should be ready before the tour. Sounds pretty sick if I must say so myself. CD version on ESCAPE ARTIST RECORDS may be even sooner.
NO FUN will be playing with FUCKED UP and probably the VIBRATORS in july, which im really excited about, and we're recording right away for a 7" on a label who's name i don't even know yet but its a couple great dudes from BRAIN HANDLE and FLAK out of Pittsburgh.
I've hit the fuckin big time...
BIG TIME IDIOT
